Daniel and Catherine Smith Nickel had encouraged all of their daughters to educate themselves and to travel. We know this by researching their lives and noting where they lived and worked.
Mary Nickel (1860-1891) was a teacher in Waupaca, New London and Ironwood, Michigan. When she died at a young age, she was the assistant to Professor Wright at the Ironwood High School. The school board closed the schools for one week in her honor.
Katherine Nickel (1861-1954) was a well-traveled business woman. Newspaper reports mention dress-making businesses in Wausau, Menominee, and West Superior. She traveled to California, New York and Kansas City. She married William Beardmore, a widower with one daughter, in 1904 and helped to raise her.
Idaline Nickel (1864-1918) led a tragic life. Dr. C. L. Dixon, whom she married in 1890, disappeared in the woods while hunting near Eagle River in November 1894. His body was not discovered until the following April. Ida herself died when she was hit by a car in 1918.
Nancy Nickel (1868-1947+) was also a teacher in Waupaca, Ishpeming and Calumet, Michigan.
Flora Nickel (1870-1912) taught school in Ironwood, Michigan. Her husband Vernon Sherrod was an assayer, and they lived in Utah, California and Mexico.
Sarah Nickel (1873-1946) taught primary school in Ironwood and Calumet, Michigan.
Martha Nickel (1875-1923) lived in Chicago for several years and was working as a secretary in Manhattan at the time of her death.
Blanche Nickel (1879-1938+) taught kindergarten at the Milwaukee Normal School and later moved to Calumet, Michigan. Her first marriage occurred in Billings, Montana and she remarried in Clark, Washington.
Nettie Nickel (1881-1970) married Jules Endweiss, who worked as comptroller for a Guanajuato, Mexico development company. They lived in Mexico for many years as well as Chile and Bolivia. His home base was Hackensack, New Jersey.

Hi Annette, I found your research on the Nickel sisters quite fascinating. Idaline Nickel is my great grandmother. I never knew much about her except that she was widowed at a young age with a baby/todldler who was my grandfather Daniel Hannibal Dixon. Her brother in law Albert Dixon lived in San Diego California. My understanding is that he had a house built in 1896 that would eventually become the family home of Idaline and Daniel. That is where my father Charles Oliver Dixon was raised and where I lived the first eight years of my life before my parents were divorced. I did know and meet my great great aunt Netta Nickel Endweiss as she lived in San Diego for a time. Do you know much about Daniel Nickel and his wife Catherine? I understand he emigrated from Ireland and she from Germany. Do you know his occupation?
ReplyDeleteSo pleased that you commented! I have done extensive research on the Nickel family because Daniel's wife Catherine is my g.g. grandfather's sister. The Schmidt/Smith family came from Langenaubach, Hesse, Germany in 1852, arriving in Waupaca, WI by 1856. I'd be happy to share any info you find interesting. Not too much on Daniel Nickel. We think his parents originated in Scotland but he was born in Ireland. My email is xwsordsmith13@gmail.com if you'd like to continue to correspond. Annette
